what is new media?

Through the school's New Media program, students are using the latest technologies to become creators in a world that is increasingly digitally-based.

Our New Media faculty are constantly looking towards progressive, emerging technologies. We currently offer courses and after school programs including video production, music production, creative coding, design and fabrication, 3D design, interactive design, design and fabrication, photography, animation, and more. The definition of new media changes daily, and it will continue to do so—meaning SCH's New Media curriculum is always evolving!

Students are encouraged to ask Why? and Why not? about the world around them.

The Fab Lab (in CEL) is a special and unique opportunity for students because it combines the skills and talents that the student already has, with something that they care about outside the classroom walls, and spend an entire semester beginning to design and craft a solution for that topic or problem. It is creative problem solving at its best, and in the end, New Media opens the doors to many more opportunities for the student beyond a normal curriculum.

In grades 5 through 8, our Middle Schoolers develop problem-solving and collaboration skills within the digital realm. Building on their Lower School New Media experiences, students continue to learn to code, design and fabricate, use and interpret data, and tell stories through media-rich presentations and digital media. Our goal for Middle School New Media students is to encourage them to become thoughtful digital creators.

Creative Coding

Here at SCH, our New Media curriculum works in tandem with our Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership (CEL) where all students learn to code. In Lower School, students begin by learning SCRATCH, then later are introduced to JavaScript in Middle School. All 9th graders are required to take Creative Coding (XCode). After their CEL Capstone is completed, students are given the opportunity to continue their studies through Art Electives in Coding.

Interactive Media

Being able to code is only part of the skill set needed to be a digital creator. Understanding and creating circuitry to interact with software is the focus of Interactive Media and is taught beginning in fourth grade. Coming to campus? Look for the sensors placed between Middle and Upper School—they were created by our 8th graders and are gathering real-time data!
