Music

Students begin to explore a variety of instruments throughout their Lower School years and have a concentrated study of string instruments in 3rd grade. In 4th grade, every student selects an instrument and begins study for the year. By 5th grade, they can decide whether or not to join the Middle School instrumental ensembles. Beginning in 8th grade, all instrumental students join to form an orchestra. In Upper School, all instrumentalists join the orchestra and have the opportunity to audition for the Honors Chamber or Jazz Ensembles.

The music program at SCH sponsors an after-school Private Lesson Program enabling students to study with master teachers in a wide variety of instrumental choices as well as voice. Our program features instruction in Piano/Keyboard, Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass), Guitar, Woodwinds (Clarinet, Saxophone), Percussion, Brass (Trumpet, Trombone), and Voice. Voice is offered to students beginning in Middle School.

Learning to think of music as a creative language is a focus in Lower School when students begin to learn music fundamentals. This can manifest in many ways such as an assembly of compositions centered around the cycle of the butterfly, or around trains and train sounds. In Middle and Upper School, students can choose to study music through a variety of cultures, or through the Songwriting class in the Vidcast Studio.
