Chestnut Hill Academy's traditional Blue & Blue Day and Springside School's Blue & Gold Day have long been recognized for the outstanding school spirit they demonstrate. Now, as one school, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, we are excited to host a school-wide spirit day featuring traditional, longtime favorites as well as brand-new events designed to be more inclusive of our student body.

Arrival:

All Lower School Girls & Middle School Girls students and Upper School Blue & Gold participants arrive at their normal divisional times.
Senior parents will do a "cheer" at the beginning of the day, before the races for the senior class.
Races start at 9:00 AM.

End of Day:

Lower School students will be dismissed to their parents at the conclusion of their event.
Middle School students may leave the field directly or return to the Cherokee Loop for pick-up at 11:30 AM.
Upper School sports will have practice as scheduled.
District buses will operate as usual.

Blue & Gold Day History

What is Blue & Gold Day

Blue & Gold Day is an intra-school competition amongst the female students at SCH. When a girl first enrolls, she is assigned to a color: blue or gold. If there is a family history at the school (a sister, mother, grandmother, or aunt), that student is assigned the same color as their family predecessor. (Sisters enrolling at the same time would naturally be on the same team.)

Blue and Gold Day was typically held on a Friday in the fall. Each grade has a unique event and the winners are given points.

At the end of the day’s competition, the seniors have a tug of war and a winner is declared.

Traditionally, parents/family members write and perform a song for the girls in the graduating class in conjunction with Blue & Gold Day.

The History of Blue & Gold Day

Wooden plaques lining the wall of the Vare Field House indicate the first known spirit competition at Springside School took place in 1927. In the early years, the teams were not colors, rather Chestnuts or Burrs, with a nod to the tree commonly found on campus. (A burrr refers to the spiny casing that contains the fruit called a Chestnut.) Originally, a Lower School event, the competition was connected with another of the girls’ traditions: May Day. Along with the baseball throw, the girls participated in several track events by grade level. For a while there were Swedish rhythmic exercises, though it is unclear what those actually looked like.

The Chestnut vs. Burr history recorded on the school’s plaques stop at 1990 and we’re thinking that was the time at which the school moved to competing by its colors: Blue or Gold with relay races by grade that have become a rite of passage. Blue and Gold Day competition continues to this day and is known far and wide to be one of the most spirited days of the year.

Blue & Blue Day History

What is Blue & Blue Day?

Blue & Blue day is an intra-school competition amongst the male students at SCH. When a boy first enrolls, they are assigned to a color: light blue or dark blue. If there is a family history at the school (a sibling/parent/grandparent/uncle), a student is assigned the same color as their family predecessor. (Brothers enrolling at the same time would naturally be on the same team.)

Blue and Blue Day typically occurs on a Friday in late April. A bagpiper leads the student body out to the Maguire Stadium/Landreth Field/Hines Track where the Lower School boys participate in novelty races and the Middle and Upper School students participate in track and field events— sprint dashes, the long jump, shot put, shuttle hurdles, 800-meter relay—and a tug of war.

At the end of the day, the score is tallied and a winner is declared. The flagpole in the Inn’s courtyard waves the flag of the winning color at the very top until the next year’s event.

The History of Blue & Blue Day

By all accounts, the first Blue & Blue Day was in 1908 and started in an effort to provide the school’s boarding population with an activity on a Saturday. Students played a football game and, interestingly, chose to wear dark blue or light blue jerseys, even though the school's colors were gold and dark brown at the time.

Initially, at the close of each team’s season, boys competed in their sport and parents were invited to watch. Football was usually the test game in the fall, with soccer and basketball in the winter, and baseball in the spring. If there was snow, skiing and sledding were added to the mix. There is no record of how the competition was scored.

Around 1911, the student population increased and other games were introduced. When the boarding population dried up, the day became more of a field day and has operated as such uninterrupted since the 40s (with a hiatus during the war years).

In 1967, math teacher and amateur bagpiper Bill Reeves began to lead the procession from the Jordan Building, picking up the other grades as they approached the field. When Reeves left the school resorted to hiring a bagpiper from the Irish club in Mt. Airy, from whence they are still hired. Fun fact: In 2006 senior Kevin Hines (son of Paul Hines) piped them in!
