ABOUT THE TEAM

In 2024, legendary head coach Paul Hines retired and passed the torch to Salvatore Scarafone after 40 years of leadership, success, and service at SCH.

Coach Sal is a running sports athlete, USATF certified and registered coach, Pepperdine Executive MBA graduate, with almost a decade of track and cross-country coaching experience in the CYO, USATF, and AAU leagues. His club team won back-to-back indoor track championships in 2023 and 2024, and over the years he has coached numerous All-American athletes.

Coach Scarafone and the Athletics staff have assembled an all-star roster of assistant coaches:

Julian McFadden '06: Has coached at SCH in many capacities over the past eight years and brings a wealth of knowledge as a sprint and jump specialist.

James Vallery: Coached at Cheyney University for five years and joined SCH in 2016. Coach Val is a sprint and hurdles specialist.

Christy Tinneny: Has coached track & field in the CYO league for eight years and is currently working as a distance specialist.

Sean Burns: A former collegiate pole vaulter for Kutztown University, Coach Sean is taking our pole vaulters to the next level.

Darian Bryant '16: Throws Coach, SCH alumnus (2016) Football & Shot Put, former collegiate athlete for Temple University, Towson University, & Virginia Union.

Our track & field team has access to customized strength, conditioning, and fitness training provided in our new state-of-the-art weight room, as well as athletic trainers who partner with our coaches.

For most of our athletes, the outdoor track season is a continuation of the indoor track season. Distance runners build a base throughout the cross-country and indoor track seasons. In the spring, they focus on increasing their speed to run their best time at the championship meet. Sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers, and throwers fine-tune their skills in the spring to achieve their goals by mid-May.

In April, our team participates in several meets including the Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania’s iconic Franklin Field. The Inter-Ac Track Championship and PAISAA Championship meets are in May, and nationals are traditionally held in June.

SCH has a rich history of graduating track & field student-athletes who have competed for colleges such as the University of Arkansas, the University of Tennessee, Penn State University, Johns Hopkins University, Emory University, and Columbia University.
