ABOUT THE TEAM
In 2023 the boys and girls track and field programs merged, with legendary head coach Paul Hines at the helm. James Matthews took the reins as associate head coach, and together they are joined by a number of specialized and experienced assistants.
Both teams have earned the respect of state track coaches over the last several decades, with many individual and team accomplishments, including multiple Inter-Ac championships, a PAISAA championship, and many individual champions.
For most members of the track team, the outdoor season is a continuation of the indoor season. Distance runners have built a base throughout the cross country and indoor track seasons. In the spring, they focus on increasing their speed to enable them to run their best by the championships. Sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers, and throwers will fine-tune their skills in the spring to achieve their goals by mid-May. Hard work and warm weather are the ingredients that enhance performances.
In April, the team participates in dual meets as well as relay invitationals. SCH also has the opportunity to compete in the Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania during the outdoor season. The Inter-Ac Track Championship and PAISAA Championship are in May, and Outdoor Nationals are traditionally held in June.
SCH has had track and field athletes continue in the sport at all levels of competition at schools such as the University of Arkansas, the University of Tennessee, Penn State University, Johns Hopkins University, Emory University, and Columbia University.
