ABOUT THE TEAM
The wrestling program at SCH was established in the winter of 1962–1963 for both Middle and Upper School. Wrestling continues to play an integral part in the physical and mental development of young athletes at the school.
Wrestling has a long tradition of success at SCH. The 2017-2018 team won a program-best 18 duals and qualified 9 wrestlers to the Prep Nationals as they placed 4th in the tough PAISWT. Over the past half-century, teams have won numerous individual and team championships. Team and individual goals tend to center on performing well in the league, States, and Nationals. A number of student-athletes have gone on to compete in college. The Middle and Upper School wrestling teams both compete in the Inter-Academic League.
A highlight of the season is the large invitational tournament that SCH hosts in December. This Upper School varsity event has roots stretching back to 1971 and brings the entire SCH and local wrestling community together.
The Middle School team concludes its season with the Inter-Ac Junior Wrestling Championships. The Upper School team, consisting of varsity and JV wrestlers, competes in the 20-plus team Pennsylvania Independent Schools Wrestling Tournament (PAISWT) in post-season competition. The top six qualifiers from the state meet are then entered in the 100-plus team National Prep School Wrestling Championships.
Coach Joe Aversa CHA ‘07 took over the Upper School program in 2022 after assisting for a number of years. He hopes to continue the long-standing traditions of the program, increase the visibility of the sport starting with our youngest students, and continue to develop the athletes for success.
