The language arts program in Lower School for Boys offers a diverse curriculum that capitalizes on and expands students’ interests. Students are immersed in a print-rich environment where they engage with a range of increasingly complex, high-quality literature and informational texts. Our reading program meets each boy where he is and offers targeted instruction to further his development as a skilled and fluent reader. Students read as a class, in groups, and independently so that they are appropriately challenged and supported. Our writing program emphasizes constructing stories out of daily experience, making revisions, and publishing to audiences inside and outside of the classroom. We teach students how to research an area of interest, organize what they have learned, and share their work in presentations that are spoken, written, drawn, and digital.
