Institutional Messages
Whether planned or spontaneous, memorable moments matter. According to The Power of Moments, they have four defining features: elevation, insight, pride, and connection. This year, in the process of deepening our understanding of our school’s core strengths and distinctive assets, I have seen generous portions of all four.
I have a little-known ritual that is at once a goal, a philosophy, and a practice that I’ll make plain here: Every classroom, every week.
SCH is a place in which defining moments, big and small, happen all the time. Sometimes they’re in the classroom; sometimes they’re on the field, on the court, on the stage, or even in the woods. Often they’re planned; other times, not so much. They occur because SCH has a knack for making them happen through a community teeming with a positive culture and a joyful climate.
Chance Takers
Our 2022-23 social media campaign, #SCHanceTakers, pays homage to the speech given by head of school at his Convocation Ceremony in the start of the school year, where he offers, "What would you do with a chance?" #SCHanceTakers will post on Insta, Facebook, & Twitter so be sure to follow along!
Taking chances can be not only challenging but frightening. But What Do You Do With a Chance? encourages us to be courageous in the face of fear. [...] So, here’s a little homework for you. One: Think about a time when you took a chance, such as saying hi to someone new or trying a new food. How did the chance make you feel? Scared? Excited? Worried? Two: Ask a friend, parent, or relative about a time they took a chance. Talk about what you do when you see someone who takes a risk and falls down. How do you encourage them? How do you intervene if others laugh. Three: Be a chance hunter! Seek out chances—ones that allow you to grow, ones that create a sense of wonder and add meaning to your life.

Fired Up Fridays
Our 2021-22 social media campaign, Fired Up Fridays, pays tribute to the message engraved in the stone mantelpiece above the fireplace in the Henry Library that reads: “Kyndle yr awne ffyre” (Kindle Your Own Fire). Each Friday we will shine a light on members of the school community whose passion runs deep for a particular interest, activity, class, or hobby. #FiredUpFridays will post on Insta and Facebook, so be sure to follow along!
