Players (established in 1936) is SCH’s Upper School extracurricular theater troupe with a longstanding history. With two productions each year—a musical in the fall and a drama in the spring—students have opportunities for growth in acting techniques, technical design and construction, and leadership.
Players is an active participant in the Greater Philadelphia Cappies, part of the international Critics and Awards Cappies Program for high school theater. Students in participating Cappies schools practice serving as theater critics by reviewing other high school productions in the area and writing reviews.
outside the rec
The Rec is SCH's performing arts center. In 2016, Upper School students introduced an educational component to their theatrical curriculum called “Outside the Rec.” This student-led conversation provides an outlet for the cast and crew to discuss difficult issues or outdated perspectives that are addressed in productions.
This is the place for our students to find their passions and develop skills in theater. Middle School students 6-8th grade can choose to join the after-school Middle School Drama production and participate as a member of the cast (by audition) or crew. The emphasis is on collaboration and many students go on to become a part of Players in Upper School.
In Upper School, students may expand on their interests and passions for performing arts. Theater production is a performance-based class in which Upper School students collaborate as part of a production team for live performances. Each student in theater production chooses to focus on acting or theater tech. If taken a second year, they can also focus on directing.
