A: Both Reggio Emilia and Montessori are child-centered approaches, but they differ in philosophy and practice. Montessori emphasizes individual work, structured routines, and self-directed learning with specific materials. Reggio Emilia, which guides our ECC program, is more collaborative and inquiry-based.  We believe children learn best through play, exploration, and projects that emerge from their interests. Teachers act as co-learners and guides, and the classroom environment is designed to inspire curiosity and creativity.

A: Children at the ECC spend ample time outdoors every day in all seasons. We believe outdoor exploration is essential to early childhood development and supports physical growth, curiosity, and connection to the natural world. Families are encouraged to dress their child for the weather, and all students bring waterproof boots for puddle jumping, mud play, and campus adventures. Our 62-acre campus provides endless opportunities for discovery. All children enjoy daily outdoor play and nature walks, and our older students often hike in the Wissahickon.

A: At the ECC, conflict is seen as a natural and valuable part of early learning. In alignment with the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we view social interactions, including moments of disagreement, as meaningful opportunities for growth, reflection, and community building.

Our teachers guide children in recognizing their emotions, communicating their needs, and using respectful language to resolve disagreements. Rather than stepping in with quick fixes, we support children in developing empathy, problem-solving skills, and the confidence to express themselves in appropriate ways.

In Reggio-inspired classrooms, relationships are considered central to learning. We approach conflict not as something to eliminate, but as an essential part of learning how to live and collaborate with others. Through modeling, gentle guidance, and reflective conversations, we help children build the social-emotional tools they need to navigate relationships with care and respect.

A: Academic readiness at the ECC is nurtured through personalized, play-based learning that honors each child’s unique developmental path. Small class sizes allow teachers to work closely with children in both small groups and one-on-one settings, meeting a wide range of learning profiles and readiness levels with care and intention.

You won’t find worksheets here! Instead, we embrace the Reggio Emilia philosophy and the “100 languages of children,” offering hands-on, creative, and inquiry-driven experiences.

Our classrooms are literature-rich environments that spark curiosity, invite questions, and encourage children to explore ideas in meaningful ways. Foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, problem-solving, and communication emerge naturally as children engage in thoughtful dialogue, storytelling, building, drawing, and collaborative play.

A: At the ECC, we believe rest is an essential part of a young child’s day. It provides a chance to recharge, reflect, and develop important self-regulation skills. Rest time is about creating space for calm, stillness, and comfort in a busy, engaging environment.

Children in the Willows and Laurels classrooms have the opportunity to nap for approximately an hour and a half each day. For children in Chestnuts and Junior Pre-K, rest time is shorter—about 45 minutes—and is designed to meet the evolving needs of older preschoolers. Children who do not sleep are encouraged to rest quietly with books or soft activities. 

Our teachers partner closely with families to support individual rest needs and help each child feel safe and relaxed during this quiet part of the day.
