SCH Educators: Artists, Scholars, and Leaders

From crafting miniature masterpieces to shaping the future of language education, SCH faculty are making their mark on the world. Our educators are not only inspiring students in the classroom but also actively contributing to their respective fields outside of school.

Their achievements demonstrate the school's dedication to professional excellence and commitment to vigorous academics, teaching, and learning.

We've highlighted a few recent achievements below:

Reflecting his passion for language learning and a commitment to promoting cultural understanding, world languages teacher Ben Tinsley presented “Embracing Diversity: Teaching Culture” at the recent American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Conference, which is globally recognized as the most comprehensive professional development event for language educators in the U.S. Additionally, he was invited to participate in a panel discussion on “Language as Liberation” alongside leading scholars in world language education. Maxime Sinal, director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, recently attended his 10th NAIS People of Color Conference/Student Diversity Leadership Conference (PoCC/SDLC) as a co-facilitator and SDLC faculty member for the last nine years. With a theme this year Lifting As We Climb: Elevating Our Schools Through Love and Justice, the conference focuses on self-reflecting, forming allies, and building community and is led by a diverse team of trained adult and peer facilitators. In his role, he partnered with two other facilitators leading workshops on justice, change, love, and belonging to name a few for a family group with 67 students across the country. In addition, he supported the student Black affinity space alongside 15 other facilitators for more than 500 students across the country. Middle School visual arts teacher and ceramic artist Irene Yoon recently exhibited her work at the Tiny Chairs group show in Old City, hosted by Stickball. The exhibition brought together pieces from 30 local ceramic artists. Each embraced the whimsical challenge of crafting chairs within a six-inch dimension, resulting in nearly 70 miniature masterpieces. Above, middle: Irene Yoon

Over the past year, Andrew Silverman, Lower/Middle school health and physical education teacher and Upper School boys and girls tennis coach, served as the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) PA president focusing on future professional involvement and identifying and cultivating new leaders in the profession. SHAPE is a volunteer-run organization dedicated to promoting and enhancing health and physical education across Pennsylvania by providing advocacy, leadership, and professional development opportunities. On November 7th-8th, after over a year of planning and hard work alongside colleagues, SHAPE PA held its annual state conference in Manheim at Spooky Nook Sports. The 2-day professional development event was a success with over 70 sessions presented to 450 health and physical education professionals.
