Mo'ne Davis '19 Honored at Smith Memorial Playground

This month, we shine our alumni spotlight on Mo’ne Davis, Class of 2019. While Davis has enjoyed many notable moments in the lights over the years, she added to her already impressive CV earlier in February when she was recognized as a “Leader and Legend of Philadelphia” at the Smith Memorial Playground in East Fairmount Park.

For the month of February, the playground is hosting an outdoor exhibit celebrating notable members of Philadelphia's Black community with a display for each honoree featuring biographical information, kid-friendly facts, and information about related Philadelphia landmarks, activities, and recommended reading for future exploration. Davis is featured at the playground with other Philly notables, including Mayor Nutter.

A former Little League baseball pitcher who was one of two girls who played in the 2014 Little League World Series, she was the first girl to earn a win and to throw a shutout in Little League World Series history. She was also the first Little League baseball player featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated and Sports Illustrated Kids as “Athlete of the Year.”

Davis fans can read more on the Smith Memorial Playground website here and look for Davis in the next issue of SCHool magazine where she is featured as an alumni author!

SCH families: The free and public exhibit, installed for Black History Month, “provides an entry point for family discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion as it uplifts and affirms the achievements of remarkable Philadelphia individuals. The exhibit offers an example for children that can both inspire and encourage them to see in themselves a path to achievement.”
