Upper Schoolers Showcase Hydroponic Initiative at City's Green Schools Event

On May 7, three eco-inclined Upper School students represented SCH at the City of Philadelphia’s “Green Schools” event in the Horticultural Center in Fairmount Park.

The event—sponsored by Mayor Cherelle Parker’s sustainability and recycling teams—recognized 29 educational institutions that received Green School grants in the amount of $2,500. In keeping with Parker’s vision for Philadelphia to be the “safest, cleanest, greenest” big city in the country, the City disbursed a total of $79,500 to fund a range of projects, from refillable water bottle stations to pollinator gardens.

Community Plate founders juniors Judah Meyer, Leo Cohen, and Damian Melzer-Surkan were the SCH ambassadors who shared progress on their hydroponic gardening initiative with the City’s sustainability leaders and dignitaries, as well as with K-12 students from peer schools. The event provided our awardees an opportunity to learn about other schools’ initiatives and to begin to create a community of green changemakers within the city.
