Upper School Service Council Recognized by Mayor

SCH Upper School Service Council visited Mayor Cherelle Parker’s office this week after receiving a special invitation extended to all school award winners of the Philly Service Competition.

Earlier this month, the Council won third place for its project in the Community Partners Category, transforming an enrichment space in Water Tower Place. The award honors projects that work with community partners in “a significant way, whether establishing relationships with a multitude of community partners or working strategically with one community partner to strengthen their project's impact.”

During the meeting, Mayor (and SCH parent!) Parker expressed how much she values the students and their willingness to be the "doers" of the city. She praised them for not waiting for things to be done, noting that when they see something they want to change and improve, they take action and do it themselves.

“Our Service Council students have surpassed my expectations during this project," said Joyce Zeka, who acts as a Service Council adviser. "The number of hours they logged in my room designing and planning the literacy/art space, building furniture, collecting and organizing books, and painting murals to add life and color to the walls at the rec center is truly impressive. They put their heart and soul into it. I am so proud of them for their dedication and passion!"

The project was personal for Service Council co-head Chloe Hanson, who grew up attending the same aftercare program through J.S. Jenks Elementary School. After noticing a lack of access to creative spaces in the community, Service Council spent months revitalizing a "worn-down" area into a bright, inviting sanctuary.

"It’s about paying attention to what’s missing, what’s needed, and where we can make something better for people who deserve it," said Hanson. "The kids here have so much imagination and talent, and they deserve the chance to explore it fully."
