Upper School Service Council to Support Troops with PSA Award Funds

The Upper School Service Council is celebrating a win for student service! Not only were they awarded $1,000 from the Philly Service Award (PSA) organization this past fall for their work assembling backpacks for homeless Philadelphians, but they also won an additional $1,000 at the PSA Impact Awards ceremony for engaging with the PSA social media platform and posting photos and videos of their service work. While they didn't snag the popular vote, the extra boost in funds means even more opportunities to give back. The council will be using the additional money to assemble care packages for military members stationed overseas through Operation Shoebox.

“I am proud that our Upper School Service Council students took on the challenge of the Philly Service Awards’ mission ‘to engage and inspire Philadelphia youth to change the city from the inside out while carving their own path to civic leadership,’” says Upper School Service Council advisor Ann Zalasky. “It was powerful to have our students interact with business leaders and city council people and to see that the service projects that we do at SCH are meaningful beyond the scope of our own campus. We are already gearing up to plan another project to submit for next year's awards!”

The Philly Service Award is the pioneering city-wide high school competition focused on championing
community service projects led by Philadelphia's promising students, awarding over $100,000 in prizes to the winning schools.
