Last weekend, SCH Robotics Team 1218 ventured to Houston, TX, to compete in the FRC World Championship. Over the past four months, the team built an original robot, competed at three regional events, and won numerous awards, culminating in their ticket to the World Championship.

The team spent the first day exploring the city: They visited the Houston Museum of Natural Science, where they experienced a space mission-themed escape room, among other activities. Some members also attended “RoboProm,” a prom event hosted by a robotics team meant for people who missed their school’s prom due to the World Championship.

On the first day of competition, the team ranked 13th in their division out of 75 teams, with a 4-1 record, a promising result that would put them in a strong position for the playoffs later in the competition.

Between matches, 1218 rolled around their iconic Beach Bash cart (aka “Beach Bash On the Road”), newly accompanied by an inflatable shark mascot! This cart, which carried face paint, tattoos, hair wraps, and much more, helped to spread the beach spirit and the mission to ensure “everyone’s invited,” including all 600 teams at the event!

The team’s final day of qualification matches, which would dictate their rank before the playoffs, culminated in a total record of 7-3 and a final ranking of 16th. On the last day of the competition, Team 1218 was selected as the 4th member of an alliance led by teams from all around the world, including Illinois, Minnesota, and Israel. After two unfortunate playoff losses, the team was officially out of the competition; however, that didn’t mean their Houston experience was over: They spent their final day as a team exploring the city and reminiscing about their season.

Overall, the team had a blast in Houston and is keen to qualify for Worlds again next season.
Go 1218!
