SCH to Host Robotics Tournament

Home to the 2019 World Champion robotics team, SCH is excited to once again host the FIRST Lego League Explore Expo and FIRST Lego League Challenge Qualifier for lower and middle school students this Saturday, December 3.

Families are encouraged to take a break from their Saturday routines and head to campus to catch some of the spirited, hand-wringing competition that is a signature aspect of any robotics tournament! Over 300 robot enthusiasts (from 25 teams!) will converge on SCH’s Vare Field House all day, with peak action taking place after lunch, from 1 to 4 PM (approximately).

FIRST, whose acronym stands for “For Inspiration & Recognition of Science and Technology,” asks all teams to apply their core values—teamwork, fun, inclusion, discovery, impact, and innovation—to develop, design, and engineer solutions for their challenge. This year’s robot game is called SUPERPOWERED and is about collecting energy units from different sources around the mat and distributing them to where the energy will be consumed. Points are scored for releasing energy units from the models and for delivering energy units to target destinations. Teams will need to write sophisticated programs to meet the 20-30 robot skill tasks baked into the challenge. FIRST hopes that competitors will recognize the importance of energy in our lives and become a superpowered superhero that understands how the choices we make impact our world.
