SCH Students Present at Start Talking Science Event

Invited to “indulge their inner nerd and bring their curiosity,” students from SCH’s honors astrophysics research class participated in Start Talking Science last week, a First Friday event hosted at the Science History Institute in Philadelphia. The evening open house, where presenters share their research posters, is designed to make cutting-edge science accessible to the public.

A selective event, SCH was the only high school represented, joining undergraduate and graduate students, professors, scientists, and doctors from institutions such as Penn, Drexel, Temple, UConn, Penn State, and CHOP.

Student presenters Claire Lynch, Reed Knoblock, Leo Cohen, Aaron Jia, and Judah Meyer were joined by their teacher Dr. Alissa Sperling and classmates Jude Hackford, Izefia Yin, Logan Landau, and Alex Luce, who attended as guests.

“It was rewarding to share my research with the public and learn about the work of others,” said senior Judah Meyer.

Reflecting on the evening, Dr. Sperling noted, “You can do the most important and impressive science out there, but you also need to be able to explain it to your audience. The value of science communication is something we stress in our science curriculum, so it was incredibly rewarding to watch our students present their work—whether to professional scientists or families with young children.”
