Throughout the past two months, the SCH Robotics team has been hard at work building their robot, SURGE, for this year’s FRC season, REEFSCAPE. In this aquatic-themed game, the goal is to place pieces of short PVC pipe called “coral” onto a structure with pegs in the center of the field called the “reef.” The reef is filled with aqua-colored balls called “algae” which must be removed to score coral. These can be scored in a small goal on the side of the field or a large net high up in the center. At the end of the game, robots must climb onto small dive cages and stay elevated without touching the ground.
SURGE is a versatile robot that can perform every task on the field at a high level.
“With the ability to reach speeds of 13 miles per hour in any direction, and an elevator that can reach up to 9 feet tall, SURGE is super efficient at both scoring coral and algae without fail,” says 1218 mechanical team lead Leo Cohen '26. “Despite its weight of 115 pounds, SURGE has a quick and simple climb that it can consistently perform at the end of every single match.”
In addition to SURGE, the team revealed its own theme for this season, “Beach Bash.” Beach Bash ties into the given water-themed FRC season but twists it to fit 1218’s values.
“Promoting inclusivity, diverse identities, and the expansion of STEAM, the goal of Beach Bash is to emphasize that EVERYONE’S INVITED!” says Paige Murray '25, co-lead of 1218’s Impact & Outreach subteam.
To celebrate the launch of the season, 1218 is selling custom shirts with a beach-themed design.
