Empowered by a $1,000 Philly Service Award, SCH Upper School Service Council students are gearing up to make a difference in the lives of roughly 75 students from several under-resourced Philadelphia schools. The award will allow students to expand their community service efforts and effect positive change right here on campus through Horizons at SCH.
Last year, the award helped to support alumna Alexa Rhodes’ HELPING the Homeless Backpacks project. Building on this success, the school will now collaborate with Dr. Kenyatta Patterson, Lower School teacher and Horizons at SCH director, to implement an enrichment program for Horizons students this summer. Students will also help to implement a book buddy program and create personalized book bins for each child. Additionally, the funds will help to organize a back-to-school supply drive again and distribute backpacks to Horizons students.
Horizons at SCH offers a high-quality, hands-on learning experience outside of the traditional school year to support academic achievement and healthy youth development. As it approaches its fifth year at SCH, the program will serve over 75 rising 1st-5th-grade students in the summer of 2025. Horizons students experience a full day of learning opportunities, including literacy, math, STEM, and enrichment activities such as field trips, hiking, and instructional swimming. Students also receive breakfast, lunch, and snacks at no cost.
The Philly Service Award provides valuable funding and recognition for student-led community service projects, empowering young people to become agents of change.
