SCH Chess Team Wins Second Place in the 2025 Supernationals Scholastic Chess Championship

The SCH chess team showcased their strategic prowess on the national stage, securing an impressive second-place finish out of 35 teams at the U.S. Chess Federation's 2025 Supernationals Scholastic Chess Championship held from May 9-11 in Orlando, FL. Six players represented SCH: James Salata (2nd grade), Grayson Wright (5th grade), Elliot Bergmann (6th grade), Shervin Medizad (4th grade), Ryan Medizad (6th grade), and Kellan Colby (4th grade). Five of our players played in the K-6 Under 800 section, and the team won second place out of 35 teams from across the country.

The SCH chess team held in the top standings over the three-day event (and even reached first place by the sixth round). Both Ryan Medizad and Bergmann finished by placing in the top 20 for their section, which had approximately 250 participants. Colby played in the most competitive and difficult section of the tournament, the K-5 Championship section, and he played against only higher-rated opponents in all seven of his games. He secured four upsets, including winning against a 1700-rated player in the first round.

All six members played in games that lasted hours and required sustained focus and mental stamina, and each player made significant personal gains in rating points. This was the first national tournament for all but one of our SCH chess team players, which makes the team’s accomplishments even more impressive. Over and beyond the success of our team, our players learned a ton and had a blast! Many thanks to coach Ross Colby, assistant coach Aaron Bergmann, and our chess families for their encouragement and support!
