Chess Team Clinches 4th at Nationals

The SCH chess team, led by coach Ross Colby, delivered an extraordinary performance at the National Middle School Chess Championship in Austin, Texas (May 15–17).

Competing in the K8 Under 1100 section against 34 teams nationwide, SCH held a top-six spot throughout the tournament. The team ultimately secured 4th place with 18.5 points—just 1.5 points shy of the national title. Remarkably, while most top-10 schools fielded large squads of 6 to 12 players, SCH dominated with a lean, five-player core: Elliot Bergmann, James Salata, Grayson Wright, Shervin Medizad, and Ryan Medizad.

Individual Highlights:

  • Salata & Wright: Tied for an impressive 15th place out of 233 players.
  • Colby: Represented SCH by competing in the tournament's most elite section.
