Restore the Rec Construction Update

The Rec at SCH, for so many, is more than a building; it is a home for creativity, connection, and lifelong impact.

“I look back and think of my time with Players as a privilege,” said former Players director (2012–2017) Jill Garrett. “The time we spent and the bonds we shared will forever be some of my favorite memories.”

Construction on The Rec, thanks to the Restore The Rec campaign,  is well underway, with a Ribbon Cutting scheduled for May 8 at 4:30 PM.

“The renovation of The Rec marks a pivotal moment in SCH theater education,” says director of Arts Megan Monaghan. “I am especially moved by the way this transformation honors decades of artistry, dedication, and tradition while thoughtfully reimagining the space into the state-of-the-art theater our students so deeply deserve.”

Last week, SCH’s Building and Grounds Committee toured the space, still under construction, and was struck by how well the project preserves the original livery's architectural integrity while seamlessly integrating modern systems to support performance, accessibility, and long-term sustainability. The collaboration among the project’s architects, engineers, and Players leadership has ensured careful attention to both historic detail and future functionality.

“Full access to in-house professional sound and lighting equipment will allow our students to deepen their technical expertise, explore their creativity, and bring productions to life in ways that were not previously possible with short-term rentals,” said Monaghan. “This is not just an upgrade in equipment. It is an expansion of what is possible in our teaching, our collaboration, and our artistic ambition.”

While the physical transformation is nearly complete, the heart of the project remains the people it serves. When the stage is set and the equipment ready, the focus will shift from the architecture of the building to the inspiration of the students.

“I cannot wait to see the new ways our beloved Rec will ignite creativity and inspire future generations of Players. Imagine the possibilities!” said Monaghan. “My deepest thanks to our community, whose vision and generosity made this dream a reality. I look forward to celebrating this remarkable new chapter together at the opening.”
