Original Limelights Pre-Show Opens ‘Wizard of Oz’

Audiences attending the Middle School Spotlights' production of The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition this Thursday and Saturday will enjoy an original pre-show performance by the 5th-grade Limelights drama troupe. The piece, written by SCH Middle School history teacher Dorothy Sasso, provides a unique theatrical experience. Sasso, the amazing director who not only blocked and choreographed the entire show but also patiently answered all the questions from the eager 5th graders, has been instrumental in bringing the production to life.

Heidi Painter, English teacher and director of The Wizard of Oz, revealed that the concept and script have been in development since July. “We aimed to create a fresh origin story, emphasizing fundamental theatrical skills for the Limelights,” Painter explained. “Students are learning blocking, character development, and choreography, all designed to prepare them for the larger Middle School program.”

The Limelights program serves as an age-appropriate introduction to theater, fostering a sense of accomplishment and laying the groundwork for future performance opportunities.
