Mikayla Merin '21 is Reaching for Her Dreams

Daring to dream just earned SCH junior Mikayla Merin a spot at the prestigious Disney Dreamers Academy held each year in Orlando, Florida. Over 10,000 students from all over the world apply to this program, and only 100 of the best and the brightest are selected. Mikayla will head to Disney World on March 12 as part of the Class of 2020 cohort.

Mikayla was recently interviewed on NBC TV-News and asked why she applied to the Disney Academy. Her response was immediate and simple: “What made me not want to apply? I’ll be surrounded by like-minded teens who strive and have ambition and aren’t afraid to reach for their dreams.” See NBC clip here.

What makes a Disney Dreamer stand out? The application states the qualities they seek: “A love for learning and creativity, caring for those around you, facing obstacles with poise and maturity, a positive outlook and generous spirit, and optimism for the future.”

Last year Mikayla won the Start Up Studio award in the school's Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Capstone course for her project, Kidz on Wheels, a pop-up mobile playroom for events and organizations in need of childcare with activities for children. This project was one of the chief features of her application to Disney and an enterprise she will take a deeper dive into while at the academy.

The Disney Dreamer Academy website states, “Each spring, 100 exceptional young people arrive at the Disney Dreamers Academy with ambition, excitement, and hopes for the future. Four days later, they return home with the motivation, guidance, and skills to help make those dreams come true.”
