Math Department Chair's Research Reaches National Audience

Add it up! SCH Math Department chair Derrick Keister will have not one, but three published academic articles this fall. Recently elected East Regional Representative to the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics (PCTM) governing board, he has just published a piece in the journal Mathematics Teacher: Learning & Teaching PK–12 by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Keister’s article, “Student Writings and Visualizations of Calculus Understanding,” details a set of activities he created, implemented, and refined for his AP Calculus AB course, making SCH a model for other math programs across the country.

In addition to this published work, Keister will speak at the 47th Annual Conference of the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education in State College this fall. This conference, hosted by the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, is a key event for researchers in the field. As a result of this work, he will have two additional published articles this fall. One of his presentations is a solo effort, while the other is a collaboration with Dr. Rose Zbiek, professor of mathematics education at Penn State University.

Between his new leadership role on the PCTM governing board and his recent publication and presentations, Keister is a powerful advocate for math education.
