This summer, Horizons at SCH's weekly Harambee celebrations, a Swahili tradition meaning "pulling together," welcomed several community leaders.
Each Friday, students participated in singing, dancing, and a special activity, joined by guests including Representative Tarik Khan, Valerie Harrison (Temple University's VP for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Impact), Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson, and members of the Philadelphia Fire Department.
The visitors are a key component of the Horizons program, reinforcing the program's emphasis on civic engagement, building valuable connections between the students and influential figures, and fostering a sense of belonging and aspiration.
Horizons at SCH offers a high-quality, hands-on learning experience outside of the traditional school year to support academic achievement and healthy youth development. The program serves over 75 rising first, second, third, fourth, and fifth-grade students. Horizons students experience a full day of learning opportunities, including literacy, math, STEM, and enrichment activities such as field trips, hiking, and instructional swimming. Students also receive breakfast, lunch, and snacks at no cost.
