Eamon Javers '90 Inspires Next Gen of Student Journalists

An alumnus and seasoned news veteran spoke with the next generation of SCH community journalists last week.

Eamon Javers '90, CNBC's senior Washington correspondent, shared his experiences as a student journalist with SCH's journalism class, recounting his days writing, editing, and investigating community stories for the CHA newspaper in the late '80s. Speaking via a video call, he emphasized the importance of seeking out significant stories even when facing resistance.

Javers encouraged the students, who are all involved in the Lantern, to focus on "true and important" stories. He noted that the skills they develop while working on the paper are crucial for sharing factual information with the community.

"I hope that as you do this, you learn about the importance of facts and fact gathering," said Javers, author of Broker, Trader, Lawyer, Spy, an investigative look at corporate espionage. "I've always been interested in gathering and reporting information to the community, especially information that people may not want me to."

He emphasized the importance of attention to detail. Even as a student reporting on a July 4 parade for the Chestnut Hill Local, he meticulously checked the names of the children in the bike parade, understanding that accuracy is essential for success.

Javers advised the students to be curious, cautious, skeptical, and humble. He emphasized the importance of understanding that others may have knowledge or perspectives that you lack and to approach your subjects with respect.

Javers has had a distinguished career in journalism, working as a White House reporter for Politico and appearing as an analyst on major news networks. He has received awards for his investigative journalism and his coverage of financial data. And, received the Roll of Fame Award, one of the school’s highest alumni honors, in 2022 from SCH.
