Cultivating Civic Responsibility at SCH

Head of School Delvin Dinkins sent a message to the community about the election on November 1. “At SCH,” he wrote, “we strive to create an environment where our students, faculty, and staff can engage meaningfully and respectfully with each other and the world around them, even when opinions differ and emotions run deep.”

The school community has been actively involved in and learning about the electoral process, with many students participating as first-time voters or poll workers. By encouraging students to participate in elections and other civic activities, SCH aims to cultivate informed and engaged citizens prepared to effect positive change in their communities and beyond.

Upper School students also took part in a mock election on campus. You can find the results of that mock election, run by students for students, in The Campus Lantern. In addition, seniors Anthony Gentile and Matt McTamney reported on live presidential election results on The Campus Lantern’s Instagram on Tuesday night.

Lower School girls voting

Lessons about election day and voting procedure took place all over campus, including Lower School. After reading V is for Voting and Your Voice, Your Vote, 1st graders in Amanda Geiger’s class cast voted for their favorite foods. They made voter registration cards, stood in line for a turn to vote, filled out ballots in privacy booths, and proudly displayed "I voted" stickers. (Congrats to the winner: the cheeseburger!) The girls also wrote about what they would do if elected president.
