Bridging Cultures Through Language: AP Spanish Students Translate Art for the Community

This week, our AP Spanish students were entrusted with a special mission: translating the descriptions of works of art showcased in a retrospective dedicated to renowned Venezuelan artist and Philadelphia public school teacher Henry Bermudez at the Woodmere Art Museum.

This wasn't just any translation project. It was a personal request from Bermudez himself, driven by his desire to make his art accessible and resonate with a wider audience. The AP Spanish students rose to the challenge, translating accompanying descriptions and titles. Their work became instrumental in bridging the language gap and fostering a deeper understanding of Bermudez's artistic expression for the entire community.

This community partnership allowed the students to apply their language skills in a real-world setting, appreciate the power of cultural exchange, and contribute to fostering inclusivity within the arts. As a bonus, they were given a tour by alumna Lya Rodgers ’06, about the various art exhibitions in Woodmere. Afterward, as a result of their hard work, the Spanish AP class enjoyed an immersion lunch experience at a local Mexican restaurant in Chestnut Hill.

The Henry Bermudez retrospective remains open to the public for the next two weeks. We encourage everyone to visit the museum, witness the impact of our AP Spanish students' valuable contribution firsthand, and immerse themselves in the captivating world of Bermudez's art.
