Biomedical Science Focus Track Accepts its First Cohort of Five Students

Five 9th-grade students were accepted into the first cohort of SCH’s new Biomedical Science focus track. After a rigorous application and interview process, the Science Department is pleased to announce the acceptance of Soleil Bynum, Gray David, Anna Gauvin, Nolan Gibson, and Adam Lane. Each demonstrated a passion for pursuing science outside of the classroom—a key component of the BioMed program.

BioMed track students must complete specific coursework during their tenure at SCH and log 25 extracurricular science hours each summer after their sophomore and junior years to receive their prestigious certificate at graduation. The department has partnered with scientific organizations in the Philadelphia area to offer SCH-exclusive opportunities, thanks to our extensive parent and alumni network. Notable collaborators include Penn Medicine, Monell Chemical Senses Center, Academy of Natural Sciences, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Drexel College of Medicine, Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Jefferson, and the USDA.

“I look forward to seeing the valuable connections the BioMed cohort will make with Philadelphia’s scientific community. As ambassadors to SCH, I know they will undoubtedly show how driven and capable our students are,” says Lisa Queeno, program coordinator. “All group members, even as freshmen, have already applied and been accepted to various science programs this upcoming summer—a testament to their commitment to science!”

Each student brings a unique set of skills and interests that round out the group.

“Soleil and Nolan are both interested in veterinary medicine,” reports Queeno. “Soleil is already planning her 10th-grade CEL Capstone project, which addresses motor deficiencies in veterinary patients. Nolan curates bioactive vivariums and films microscopy videos in his spare time. Anna and Adam are neurology enthusiasts; Anna has completed an anatomy program at Drexel’s cadaver lab and is currently studying for the Philadelphia Brain Bee. Adam is interested in studying stem cells and hopes to attend medical school. Gray, who brings a wide variety of talents to the cohort, excelling not only in science but also in math, theater, student leadership, writing, and engineering, hopes the biomedical focus track will help narrow down his career search.”
