Johanna was a tri-varsity captain in field hockey, squash, and lacrosse. She became the first Springside Lion mascot in 1993. She won the Phyllis M. Vare Award twice, the Players Award, the Alumnae Art Award, and the Caroline Susan Jones Award given by vote of the faculty and students to a senior who displays ”courage, cheerfulness, fair-mindedness, good sportsmanship, whose influence is widely felt, who has the courage of her own convictions and who is respected by all.” She continued to enjoy team sports in college at Fairfield University and in the fall of 2000, after a full year of training, completed the New York Marathon. Sigmund sadly lost her life on September 11, 2001, in the attack on the World Trade Center.
