Thinking Outside the Box

Thinking Outside the Box

What do you get when you put an architect, two educators, some motivation, and leftover materials together? One HOT idea!

Our resourceful and creative Early Childhood Center (ECC) teachers saw leftover wood pallets from their recently transformed playground as an opportunity to think outside the box (quite literally) and create something amazing for their students. Spearheaded by ECC teacher Ms. Laynie, conversations began about what could be…could it be a mud kitchen, a garden, or a hobbit house? The ideas were endless. Ms. Laynie and Ms. Whitney, both ECC teachers and SCH parents, remembered that one ECC parent, Tom, is an ARCHITECT and a PLAYHOUSE would be the perfect addition to “Miss Janet’s Playground.”

So 7 hours, a lot of power tools, and one torch later their hot idea was now a reality: a labor of love. With the mindset of giving back to their program, their only expectation was to create something joyful to call their own. “It was such a gift to be able to watch the kids bring it to life,” said Ms. Whitney. We are so thankful for our amazing teachers and all they do to make our SCH students' experience one-of-a-kind.

Our 2021-22 social media campaign, Fired Up Fridays, pays tribute to the message engraved in the stone mantelpiece above the fireplace in the Henry Library that reads: “Kyndle yr awne ffyre” (Kindle Your Own Fire). Each Friday we will shine a light on members of the school community whose passion runs deep for a particular interest, activity, class, or hobby. #FiredUpFridays posts on Insta and Facebook, so be sure to follow along!
