Nature vivante
living systems. imagined futures
Barbara Crawford Gallery | Fall Exhibition 2026
A celebration of art, ecology, and the resilience of the natural world.
The Fall Barbara Crawford Gallery (BCG) Exhibition, Nature Vivante, curated by Heather Gibson Moqtaderi, presents imagined ecosystems where plant life thrives across land and sea, highlighting themes of beauty, resilience, and fragility. Bringing together painting, sculpture, digital modeling, watercolor, textile work, and printmaking, the exhibition examines ecological interconnectedness and humanity's evolving relationship to the natural world.
Featured artists include Phaan Howng, whose overgrown, speculative landscapes in painting and sculpture imagine nature adapting beyond human systems. Rodell Warner's digital works explore the persistence of Caribbean plant life within human-shaped environments. Heidi Leitzke offers close observational watercolor and thread studies of organic forms, emphasizing their quiet structure and detail. Deirdre Murphy reinterprets pressed plants and ink studies as contemporary botanical records rooted in memory and preservation. Marguerita Hagan draws on field and underwater research, magnifying flora from sea to land, micro to macro, and its vulnerability to environmental change with which we are intrinsically linked.
Together, the artists reflect the resilience and fragility of living systems across shifting natural and human worlds.
This exhibition reinforces the school’s commitment to environmental stewardship and civic engagement while offering visitors the first opportunity to tour the school’s recently accredited arboretum. Now a member of ArbNet, the global network of more than 800 arboreta around the world, SCH has identified and tagged more than 30 trees and woody taxa across its campus as part of its Level 1 arboretum accreditation.
By linking artistic inquiry, environmental education, and hands-on conservation experiences, Nature Vivante invites students and guests to see themselves not only as observers of the natural world, but as active participants in its care and future.

Art + Ecology + Community
Through interdisciplinary curriculum connections in Visual Arts, New Media Arts, Science, and Environmental Studies, visiting artists supported by the Springside Class of 1957 Artist in Residency Fund, and community partnerships with Friends of the Wissahickon, Nature Vivante extends far beyond the gallery walls. The exhibition creates opportunities for students to engage directly with artists, explore the intersections of creativity and ecology, and connect their learning to the landscapes that surround them.
Nature Vivante invites students to become more than observers of the natural world. Through artistic inquiry, scientific exploration, and environmental stewardship, they are encouraged to imagine and help shape a more sustainable future.
