The mathematics program at SCH Academy aims to develop students’ problem-solving skills and logical thinking. At all ages, this is accomplished by applying standard skills and concepts to real-life applications as much as possible. We want our students to be willing and eager to tackle a new problem, regardless of whether it looks like one they’ve done before.
Whether a student enters our program in Algebra 1 or Calculus, our Upper School math program provides each student with an appropriately challenging learning experience. Our curriculum focuses on using mathematical reasoning to formulate strategies for solving problems. We seek to create numerically fluent students who appreciate the usefulness of mathematical thought. Students learn how to interpret information, communicate logical arguments, and tolerate ambiguity. They develop an understanding of mathematics as a tool for recognizing the patterns of our world and understanding our environment. Current technologies are integrated into courses at every grade level, whereby students develop facility with graphing calculators, software, and database management.
All Upper School students are required to take four years of mathematics and may elect to take more through our elective options. A typical four-year sequence begins with Advanced Algebra 1 or Geometry and extends through Pre-Calculus, Calculus, or Statistics. Individual needs are met by sectioning into College Prep and Honors-level courses, with a Pre-AP level available in 11th grade. AP Statistics and AP Calculus courses are taught to the AP curriculum and in preparation for the AP exams given in May of each year.
